Objective: To experience and observe your reactions to the “not-OK” feelings of disorientation in a strange cultural environment.
Rationale:
This activity is based on two widely recognized premises:
1. That culture shock is endemic; we cannot inoculate ourselves against it, but we can improve our recover mechanisms, and
2. that “not-OK” feelings, once recognized have a tendency to disappear.
Procedure: Within your present cultural environment select a particular location that seems especially “foreign” to you, and plan to visit it. The location must meet only three conditions:
1. Your stay should be for at least two hours.
2. You should be able to be a participant-observer within the location you choose. Do not arrange a “guided tour”. Attempt to involve yourself directly in the activities of your chosen location.
3. You must keep a record (notebook) of your experiences, thoughts, and feelings in your foreign environment.
Examples of activities: assisting nurses in a mental hospital, if you are heterosexual: visiting a gay nightclub, participating in an unfamiliar religious ceremony, spending an evening with an unfamiliar ethnic group. There are many possibilities. The critical element is to choose something very different from what you are used to and which causes — even as you think about it — some sensation of discomfort.
Format for submission:
Your report should be approximately four double spaced typed spaces. In the report you should demonstrate knowledge of course concepts and address the following topics:
1. Describe the event, its purpose, the cultural group originating from the even, when it occurred, where it occurred.
2. Are their similar events in your culture?
3. What did you see and experience at this event that you feel confident you understood accurately?
4. What did you notice that was culturally puzzling to you?
5. How did you feel or respond personally to being in a different cultural situation that was not as predictable as communication in your own culture?
6. Describe an important conclusion due to your participation in this event.
7. Demonstrate that you have a thorough understanding of culture shock and its dimensions

Additional help:
If you cannot go out to collect the information, these are some options you can consider:
1 Watch a foreign movie such as an Indian movie or K drama.
2. Order takeout from a restaurant that serves cultural food.
3. Watch a foreign wedding or any event on youtube (or any documentary video)
4. An experience you had a long time ago
5. Others (you guys are creative enough to find any event that involves cultural shock experiences)
6 Some students included two or three experiences in the paper, which is fine too.
Some examples you can consider:
Oscars 2021 | all 15 contenders for the best foreign film of 2020

Crazy Rich Asians

Slumdog Millionaire

A Separation | Official Trailer HD (2011)

Choose a form of deviance (preferably a form of non-criminal deviance) and review the sociological research on that topic. The research paper should discuss one theoretical explanation of the deviance chosen. The paper will be 3-4 pages in length, 12 inch font, New Times Roman print, APA referenced, and double-spaced.
The paper will consist of the following:
Introduction – Define the topic. How and why is the behavior you chose deviant? Is this behavior only deviant in certain societies or in all societies? Is this a behavior that was previously deviant but is no longer deviant? Is this a behavior that was historically not deviant but is considered deviant today?
Statistics – What is the prevalence of this behavior? In other words, how widespread is it, among what groups? Discuss differences by culture, race, class or gender if appropriate.
Perspective – Choose a theory of deviance and apply it to your topic. Explain the theory in detail and show how it helps to explain the causes of this behavior. You may also want to discuss why it is considered deviant.
Sources – You must have a minimum of two academic sources for this paper. Use either academic books or journal articles. Do not use magazine articles, TV news stories, textbooks, websites, etc., unless they are in addition to your two required sources. Papers must be fully referenced using APA style.

Write a response that resonated with you for Dubois or Wells. This is a critical thinking exercise, which means you form an argument based on the information you have and support this argument. This is a process of analysis not a summary, (I already know what the article is about). Pleas use your critical thinking skills to come up with an analytical response.
Some questions to consider but you do not have to answer any of these questions!
Is this article still relevant today, how?
Why is this work both theoretical or culturally important to learn about?
*You must make an argument not a summary
*You must cite the article at least once to help support your argument

Write a short 2-page paper discussing one of the films. You will watch the film

Write a short 2-page paper discussing one of the films. You will watch the film on your own time and use course concepts and theories to analyze & explain the film. Include a very brief synopsis of the film (less than a paragraph). The bulk of the paper will be devoted to discussing the ideas, concepts, and theories we’ve covered in class.
Papers must cite (but not quote at great length) at least one passage from a relevant reading that supports your response(s) to the film. This can be a reading from class or an outside source, but cite it properly. This will help you get into the practice of citing your sources that will be required for the final paper.
Remember that you will need to define each concept, term, idea or theory that you use and link it explicitly to the film you viewed.
NOTE: If you have already seen one of these films it is OK to use it for this paper, but you might get more out of this assignment if you watch a film you haven’t seen before.

The issues to address in your paper are:
8-10 aspects of deviance portrayed in the movie. Why do the elements of the film you selected count as deviance?
In your opinion, what were the most serious deviant acts depicted in the film? What were the least serious deviant acts? Why?
Which, if any, of the deviant acts were crimes?
Who was the most deviant character in the film? The least deviant? Why?
How are the deviant acts reacted to or addressed in the film? Do you think the characters demonstrated an appropriate reaction to the deviant acts? How might you have acted differently? Why? What are some non-deviant approaches that characters could have used in the film?
Which theory of deviance is most evident in this film? Explain. That is, what is the cause of these deviant behaviors?
While writing your paper, you must include and correctly use all 5 of the following concepts. Be sure to put the terms in bold so that I can easily identify them. It is not enough to just define the concepts in the paper. You need to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts by applying them to situations in the film.
Deviance
Crime
Social control
Norm
Folkway
Post your 2-page reaction paper here.
