FINAL EXAM ESSAY DUE: Writing Assignment on the play “Trifles” (4
pages min. 5 pages max) using MLA citation

question you choose, you MUST cite from the text (play) AND AT LEAST ONE
ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC JOURNAL SOURCE FROM OUR LIBRARY DATABASES (Databases listed
below)

You may choose to cite from
as many sources as you wish; however, one must be an academic journal from the
databases
ESSAY QUESTION #1: Given the attitudes of the
men, how would you describe the values of this culture? What are these women supposed to know? What do they really know? Why do they continue to play the role of
feeling but not thinking, when it’s clear that they know and understand much
more than the men whose job it is to investigate? Why can’t the men “see or understand better
than they do? What holds them back?

QUESTION #2: You may write a Feminist
Criticism of the literary work, in which you will address the answers to at
least some of the following questions:
How is
the relationship between men and women portrayed? What are the power relationships between men
and women (or characters assuming male/female roles)? How are male/female roles defined? What
constitutes masculinity/femininity? How
do characters embody these traits? What does the work reveal about the
operations (economically, politically, socially, or psychologically) of
patriarchy? What does the work imply
about the possibilities of sisterhood as a mode of resisting patriarchy? What does the work say about women’s
creativity? What does the history of the work’s reception by the public and the
critics tell us about the operation of patriarchy?
*Must include MLA citation (a min. of one
citation per paragraph)
*Must include a works cited page that includes
at least 2 (TWO) sources – the play and You may of course cite from additional
sources.
