STUDENTS: Over the past year or so, many students have expressed an interest in learning more about LGBTQ+ history. I have finally found a reading that is objective and informative. All questions/answers in your assignment are based on the “big” reading, “Stonewall Riots,” as well as two short readings linked within the major article, “7 Facts About the Stonewall Riots and the Fight for LGBTQ Rights,” and “How Activists Plotted the First Gay Pride Parades.” For your convenience, I have all of the links separately (below), as well. The questions following the links are based on information in these three linked articles.

Please answer these questions about the linked readings in essay format:
What event served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States? (Please include date of the event) What drew the LGBT community to the Stonewall Inn in the 1960s? How was the Mafia tied in with gay bars in New York City? Why did the police ignore gay bars in New York City? Approximately how long did the Stonewall Riot last?
What was the symbol used by Nazis to identify homosexual people in concentration camps?
Who (the man’s name) published the country’s first gay-interest newsletter in the United States? How did the Mattachine Society borrow from the Civil Rights movement that was also occurring in the 1960s?
In 1970, what FOUR U.S. cities held parades to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riot? Which of these cities tried to discourage the parade by charging organizers $1.5 million dollars? Who is credited with assigning the word “pride” to events involving the LGBTQ+ community? What president first designated June as Gay and Lesbian Pride month? What president made the Stonewall Inn a national monument?
PLEASE ONLY USE LINKS PROVIDED FOR EVIDENCE, NO OUTSIDE SOURCES OTHER THAN PROVIDED. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS LET ME KNOW 🙂
