Anti-Elgin – you need to consider that, if
the Marbles are returned to Greece, this will set a precedent for the return of
all other foreign artifacts in
European and American museums that were obtained by “less than legal means”
(aka – stolen).
read
only the Elgin Marbles portion (pg.
371-376) of Marta Kania’s short journal article on the subject
-View
the photos of the Elgin Marbles from the British Museum.
You are
to write a two page (that’s two FULL pages, minimum), double-spaced paper (MLA
preferred) and argue that they were obtained
fraudulently, and should be returned. (Note – you can argue a hybrid of these
two positions). Your paper should include an introduction (which can include a
small summary of the history of the affair) and a conclusion, but keep in mind
that the majority of the paper should focus on your position/argument.
-Regardless
of which side you choose to defend, your paper should address the following
points:
·
Was
it correct for Elgin to remove the Marbles from the Parthenon? Is this theft?
·
Are
the Marbles the legitimate legal property of the British Museum / the United
Kingdom?
·
Should
the Marbles be loaned / traded / or simply returned to Athens?
You
must use at least one citation from the article in your paper to bolster your
claims.
I take plagiarism very seriously, and it will result
in an automatic zero on your paper if it is discovered to contain plagiarism.
If you are confused as to what constitutes plagiarism, consult the example I’ve
provided below. If you are still confused, please contact me before you turn in your paper.
The following two examples are adequately cited, showing me
that you have used specific quotes or paraphrase from one of your sources
properly.

agricultural communities of ancient China venerated an assortment of local
spirits
associated
with the natural forces, and with rivers, mountains, and crops.” (Fiero 70)
Ancient
Chinese agricultural communities worshipped a wide array of local spirits, many
of
which were associated with natural forces such as rivers, crops and mountains.

The two examples below are examples of plagiarism – these
examples make it appear that this is your work, when it is actually the work of
your source (even if you include the
source in your works cited section!)
